David Robert McKenzie was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 30, 1955. His family moved to Denver in 1956, Los Angeles in 1958, Phoenix in 1961, Denver in 1965, Seattle, in 1967, and Houston in 1968. He graduated from the University of California—Los Angeles with a B.A. in Political Science in 1978, then an M.A. in Public Administration in 1988 from the University of Houston. He has traveled to every major city in the USA and many in Europe, including London, Berlin, Paris, Bruxelles, and Amsterdam, as well as Bogotá. He currently resides in Houston.
